Murk Doggy Whittier Pet Store

Whittier / La Habra Pet Store Review.

Today we are reviewing a little pet store swimming with the big box pet store megalodons. I remember the rise of big box pet stores, a time when the -cos and -marts were gobbling up the market and putting all of my friends’ pet shops out of business. It’s good to see that independent pet stores can still carve out a niche that’s both beneficial for, and supported by the local community.

I’m a big advocate of shopping local. Shopping local is important because local businesses are a vital part of a community’s culture. I also enjoy getting to know the business owners who are making a difference in the community.

Yes indeed, today we do have a local pet store to talk about.

Murk Doggy Pet Food & Supplies, they’re really in La Habra, but only a stone’s throw from Whittier, California (about 200 feet.) I always enjoy stopping in this local Whittier / La Habra pet store and chatting with Greg, the owner. I remember when I was quite young and starting my first business. I see the same enthusiasm within this store.

Showing Leashes At Pet Store

It’s fun to go in and see the new pet products and services he is adding. One of the great things about local pet shops is they have items you won’t find in most of the big box stores. On this trip to Murk Doggy I found an interesting plastic leash. I thought it may come in handy for tracking in wet conditions and for doing water work. If I was still doing this kind of training I would get one to test. I have never seen a leash like this before. However, I have thought about making leashes for wet environments when I was training a lot of working dogs.

Gentle Leader and Long Line

While browsing the vast assortment of doggy items I found an interesting long line. It sure looks like it would be a lot easier to get and use than what I usually recommend. There are also the standard training aids and they have gentle leaders for obedience training.

The store has a nice selection of dog beds. I always recommend dogs have both a bed that can be easily moved and a dog crate. When teaching your dog to go to its bed I like to use one with back and side walls. The little walls help keep the treats from bouncing out.

They even have a dog backpack. I think the dog strollers and the backpack would be very useful for socializing young puppies before they can go out and meet other dogs. Using one of these will at least let you get a young pup out to see new environments and interact with people.

There is a good selection of healthy lifestyle, premium pet food. Greg is quite knowledgeable and often there is also a dog food rep in the store to answer any question you have.

And my favorite section, yep the treats. They have a lot of them, and all different kinds. They even have little whole fish snacks. I usually recommend pet parents have at least two different kinds of training treats. One soft, very high value treat, and one hard biscuit type of reward. The biscuit treat should be fairly small or easy to break into small pieces.

Pet Dog Food Rewards

Each time I go into this business I see it becoming more and more part of the community. Not only are new products added on a regular basis, but Greg is also helping local dog owners by providing needed services not offered by other local La Habra / Whittier pet businesses.

The new addition coming online is a self-serve dog wash. I see this being quite useful for a quick after-hike bath for those who like to explore the Puente Hills trails.

Well that will do it for today’s local business review. If you have a business you think I should checkout get in touch and let me know. The areas I cover are the Long beach and Gateway Cities (the traditional 562 area code) and North Orange County (the 714 area code.)

The My On The Road Business Explorer section of our site supports local communities and the local economy by reviewing local businesses. When you shop local you’ll not only be supporting local business but also strengthening the social fabric that makes for a strong community.
